Why should I choose an orthodontic specialist?
Orthodontic specialists have extensive and specialized training, generally two to three years specialty certificate after completing their general dental degree. This enables them to provide their patients with professional and personalized treatments. Not only do we move teeth, but sometimes entire facial structures may be required for permanent changes by orthodontic treatment. It is very important that treatment be appropriate and properly completed.
What is the best age to visit the orthodontist?
If you want to improve the look and feel of your smile, then any age can be great to see the orthodontist! The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children first visit an orthodontist around age seven; however, treatment is not exclusive to children, and teens, approximately twenty percent of our orthodontic practice is now made up of adult patients.
If I have braces or aligners, do I still need dental checkups every six months?
Yes! In fact, it's even more important that patients receiving orthodontic treatment visit their dentist regularly. With braces, food may be caught in places that your toothbrush cannot reach. This causes bacteria to build up which can lead to cavities, gingivitis, and gum disease. Your dentist will work closely with our team to make sure that your teeth stay clean and healthy while wearing braces.
Do I need to brush my teeth more often if I have braces or aligners?
Yes!! With braces, you should brush your teeth at least three times a day to keep your teeth, gums, and mouth healthy and clean. Brushing regularly will help remove any food that may be caught between braces. You should also floss daily to get in between your braces where your brush is not able to reach. Our team will show you how to properly brush and floss once your braces are placed.
Will my braces interfere with my school activities like sports, playing an instrument, or singing?
Playing an instrument or a contact sport may require some adjustment when you first get your braces, but wearing braces will not stop you from participating in any of your school activities! If you play a contact sport, we recommend and provide you with an orthodontic mouthguard to protect your braces or appliance.
Do braces hurt?
We have no needles in our office! Nothing that we do "hurts." After certain appointments, you may be sore for a few days. We recommend pain medication such as Advil or Tylenol to ease the discomfort and/or warm salt water gargles.
How often will I have appointments?
Appointments are scheduled based on each patient's needs. However, most of our patients in braces will be seen every 10-12 weeks. If there are specific situations that require more frequent monitoring, we will schedule appointments accordingly.
Can I schedule all of my appointments after school?
We strive to meet all our patients' scheduling needs! However, because most appointments are scheduled 10-12 weeks apart, most patients will miss minimal school due to their orthodontic treatment.
